Are You Ready to Work? August 27, 2007

Taking great joy in a job is a scoffed-at concept by most of the people with whom I work. Unfortunately, even many Christians hate the idea of employment, especially after a nice and relaxing weekend. Don’t get me wrong, I’m definitely not saying breaks and rest are bad–they’re a wonderful God-given part of life. More importantly, though, God calls us to be engaged in our vocations as ministers for Him, and do so joyfully AS UNTO GOD.
Along with this topic, I just finished listening to a great speaker, Dennis Bakke, (you can listen to his thoughts HERE) who gives some great insights into work and serving God in business. If you check out the above link, you’ll get to hear Dennis’ presentation, but don’t turn it off when it gets to the question/answer time because it is very insightful. I was challenged to think and evaluate Christian leadership in the business world–and how I should make the most of my skills as a leader in the business community.
If you’re looking for some other interesting insights into business leadership and workplace interactions with faith, you can check out the Work Research Foundation.
I hope you’re encouraged and excited to go to work tomorrow!

Welcome to the Carlson School of Management’s first-ever MBA Christian fellowship group!
Last night we had our first planning meeting with eight CSOM PT MBA students in attendance. We talked about some goals as a group and direction as well, which can be condensed into the following preliminary goals list:
-
Developing a business school fellowship that embodies strong personal friendships and Christian community; hold effective and welcoming group meetings for Bible study, prayer, and worship; and challenge students to be a relevant and an active witness in the world.
-
Hosting lectures/speaker-series that advance thinking on Christian leadership and business/faith integration and provide an effective setting for students, faculty, and professionals to form partnerships that will be reinforcing, stimulating, and vital for continued faithfulness.
-
Encouraging a continued network of MBA students, faculty, alumni, and mentors across the country (and around the world) that extends well beyond the typical two years of business school and prompts ongoing discussion, mentoring, and discipleship.
-
Planning short-term service opportunities for MBA students which utilize acquired business skills, suggest creative alternatives to professional routines, challenge spiritual complacency, and motivate compassion and ambition for the needs of the world.
We will have up-coming events and activities in the weeks and months ahead, so stay tuned! If you’d like more info, please e-mail mbafellowship@gmail.com
